Coventry City have re-signed Gustavo Hamer from Sheffield United, the club announced on Wednesday, with the midfielder returning to the Coventry Building Society Arena on a long-term contract for an undisclosed fee (ccfc.co.uk).

Sheffield United confirmed on Tuesday that the formalities of the deal had been completed, bringing to an end Hamer’s near three-year association with Bramall Lane (sufc.co.uk). The 29-year-old Dutch midfielder’s first spell with the Sky Blues ran between 2020 and 2023, when he scored 19 goals in 132 appearances and became a firm favourite at the club before leaving for the Premier League.

Back where he made his name

Hamer arrived at Coventry from PEC Zwolle in 2020 for a fee of around £1.5 million, the club’s first signing ahead of their return to the Championship, and he was a near ever-present across the next three seasons. A former Netherlands Under-20 international, his performances in that spell made him one of the division’s most consistent midfielders.

That form earned him a move to Sheffield United in 2023 on a four-year deal, and he spent three seasons at Bramall Lane, wearing the No 8 shirt and playing a Premier League campaign in 2023-24. Now he returns to the club where his reputation was built, at a moment when Coventry are preparing for the biggest season in a generation.

A signing for the top-flight return

Coventry are back in the Premier League for the first time since 2001 after winning the Championship title in 2025-26 under Frank Lampard, finishing top of the second tier to seal automatic promotion. The promotion ended a 25-year absence from the top flight, the longest of any club in Premier League history, and Hamer’s return gives Lampard a midfielder who knows both the club and the level required.

The timing is deliberate. Coventry’s first Premier League fixture in a quarter of a century is an away trip to champions Arsenal on the opening weekend of a season that begins on 21 August, with the transfer window remaining open until 1 September. Hamer becomes the latest addition to a squad being reshaped for that step up, and his knowledge of the club’s demands and its supporters removes much of the settling-in period that usually comes with a new signing.

For Sheffield United, the transfer brings in an undisclosed fee and closes a three-year chapter at Bramall Lane. The Blades now move forward with a squad reshaped around their own plans for the season ahead.

Few returns in this window carry as much meaning as this one. Hamer is not a new face arriving to learn the club’s ways; he is a player walking back into a dressing room and a stadium he knows well, just in time to help Coventry write their Premier League story.
