Lando Norris won the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix for McLaren on Sunday, beating Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli after a race that turned on clear-air pace, traffic and Oscar Piastri's late retirement. The official Formula 1 result report confirms it was Norris's first Grand Prix victory of the season and McLaren's first of 2026.
The completed result is listed in Formula 1’s official 2026 race results.
The result matters beyond the win itself. Norris recovered from losing the lead on the opening lap, while Piastri went from controlling the race to finishing with no points after contact in traffic and an apparent gearbox problem. Antonelli's third place also strengthened his championship position on a weekend when Mercedes did not have the fastest car.
Clear air changes the McLaren order
Norris started from pole but Piastri used a cut-back at Turn 2 to take the lead. The two McLarens then ran close together through the first half, with Norris telling the team that he had more pace but struggling to use it while following his teammate. McLaren kept the contest on track rather than moving Piastri aside.
The decisive phase began after Piastri made his second stop. He met Carlos Sainz's Williams in traffic and the two cars made contact at the exit of Turn 2 while blue flags were being shown. Norris, meanwhile, had clean track ahead of his own stop and produced the pace needed to reverse their order. When he rejoined, he was ahead of Piastri and held the effective race lead.
That sequence gave Norris more than a fortunate opening. He still had to create the pit-stop margin, and his laps in clear air supplied it. The contrast also exposed how little separation there had been between the McLarens earlier: one driver could look trapped while following, then immediately build the gap once the road opened.
Piastri's retirement reshapes the podium
Piastri's chances ended when a gearbox problem forced him to stop with 15 laps remaining. The resulting Virtual Safety Car prompted another round of pit-lane decisions and left Norris in control, with Verstappen second and Antonelli third. Norris finished around 15 seconds clear at the front.
The retirement turned a likely McLaren one-two into a single-car victory. It also moved Verstappen onto the second step after Red Bull had lacked the pace to stay with the leading McLarens for much of the race. Antonelli secured the final podium place after starting seventh because of a grid penalty.
Ferrari's late stops did not produce a podium. Lewis Hamilton crossed the line close to Antonelli but received a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane, which dropped him behind teammate Charles Leclerc in the final order. Isack Hadjar finished sixth, while George Russell recovered to seventh after an anti-stall problem at the start had sent him down to 21st.
Antonelli leaves Hungary with the wider gain
Norris earned the headline result, but Antonelli protected the larger championship advantage. The Formula 1 post-race account records that the Mercedes driver extended his lead despite describing the race as difficult. Associated Press reported that he left Hungary 50 points ahead of Hamilton and 59 ahead of Russell.
For Norris, the win ended a wait stretching back to Sao Paulo in November and delivered his first full Grand Prix success as the reigning world champion. For McLaren, the harder question follows immediately: its car had the pace to finish first and second in Hungary, but traffic, contact and reliability left one driver celebrating and the other watching the finish. The summer break begins with proof of McLaren's speed and a clear warning about how quickly an intra-team advantage can disappear.
